Which Substances can PTFE Filter Remove
The designed pore size of Filson PTFE filter ranges from 0.05 to 200 micron, following substances will be effectively removed:
- Bacteria: Filson PTFE filter can remove most bacteria with sizes ranging from 0.5 to 5 micron.
- Virus: Since the common sizes is less than 0.1 micron, only a small fraction of virus can be removed.

PTFE Filter FAQ Guide
PTFE filter is totally made of standard polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) material. Having a polypropylene supporting core, PTFE filter has prolonged service time and easy to install, replace and clean.
Filson PTFE filter can be used to remove contaminants in most liquids and gases. Owing to its excellent chemical compatibility, it is best suitable for aggressive corrosion, acids and alkali solvents.
The main purpose of PTFE filter is to capture particles in liquids and gases.
Since the pore size of PTFE filter ranges from 0.05 to 200 micron, PTFE filter can collect particulate as small as 0.05 micron on its surface while making filtering, and then it will let filtered liquids or gases flow out the filter.
To suitable for different applications, nylon or PTFE filter is available. There are several difference between nylon and PTFE filter:
Firstly, nylon filter is hydrophilic, so water can pass through nylon filter easily. While PTFE is hydrophobic which is not compatible with water.
Secondly, nylon filter is regarded as the most “extractable free” for HPLC or dissolution testing, while PTFE is extractable with 2 – 3 mls left.
Thirdly, PTFE filter has excellent chemical compatibility to filter strong corrosion, acid or alkali, while chlorinated solvents, strong acid or alkali should be avoided when using nylon filter.
Hydrophobic filter has surface tension and does not let water flowing through unless water pressure is larger than filter’s water entry pressure. Before filtering, it should be prewet by water-containing solvents with low surface tension. Therefore, hydrophobic filter is compatible with non-aqueous fluids, and it is best suitable for filtering air, gas and vent.
Hydrophilic filter is water-attractive and has better compatibility with water. It is easy to be wet and let the bulk water flow through the pores. Generally, hydrophilic filter can not filter air or other gases.
One is the hydrophobicity. For this reason, PTFE filter offers an ideal solution on filtering venting, air and gases.
Another is the excellent chemical compatibility. PTFE filter has better pH resistance ranging from 1 to 14, and it can be widely used in strong corrosion, acids, alkali and organic solvents.
